(NAPSI)-Anyone who owns a pet may sooner or later see spots-even if that pet is not a dalmatian.

Having stain-resistant carpet helps make it easier to repel stains on carpet. So does acting quickly. When an accident does happen, the following tips from The Carpet and Rug Institute can help remove the spot and odor:

1. Delaying may cause the spill to become a permanent stain. Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or white paper towels.
2. First, rinse the spot with lukewarm water and blot until dry. Next, try a solution of one cup white vinegar to one cup water.
3. Apply a small amount with a white cloth, and work in gently-do not rub-working from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent spreading. Allow to remain for 10 to 15 minutes. Blot until dry. Rinse with water, and blot.
4. If the spot remains, prepare a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of a liquid detergent (no lanolin) to one cup water. Never use a stronger solution. Never use a laundry detergent or automatic dishwashing detergent of any type, as they may contain optical brighteners or bleaching agents that destroy dyes and some fibers.
5. Apply a small amount of the detergent solution with a white cloth, work it in gently, and allow to remain for 10 to 15 minutes. Don't forget to blot. Rinse carefully with water, and blot until dry. Failure to completely rinse the solutions from the fiber may cause accelerated soiling.
6. Allow the area to dry completely before walking on the carpet.

Note: An animal's urine content changes daily according to diet. Therefore, pet stains may be difficult to remove.

A carpet cleaning professional may be able to restore the original appearance with special treatments, redye the affected area, or replace it.

Manufacturers are producing some styles of carpet with special, impenetrable backing that prevents liquid from seeping through to the cushion or underlying floor.
